Debt Counselling FAQ

Registered Debt counsellors act under the National Credit Act and are responsible to assist consumers with debt. The appointed Debt counsellor assist consumers to handle their finances and help over-indebted consumers free themselves from debt. Debt counsellors interact with creditors, offer advice and assist consumers in court proceedings on behalf of their customers.

Debt counsellors main function is to reduce debt by:

  • Lowering interest rates on accounts which are under the debt counselling process.
  • Consolidating all due accounts under debt review into an affordable monthly payment.
  • Reducing and/or elimination of legal fees and extra charges.
  • Protection of assets.
  • Elimination of late fees and extra charges.

A debt counsellor will ensure that your finances and debt gets looked after.

Most consumers take between 36 and 60 months to pay off their debt under debt counselling especially if there are home loans and vehicle finance included under debt review.
